Typical Provence Itinerary

 Please note: This is an example of a typical Provence itinerary. There are many options you can consider as we create your custom designed  tour of Provence with something for everyone in your group.  

 

Day 1

Upon your arrival to Provence, you will have private transfers from the Avignon TGV station or the Marseille airport to your boutique hotel in the center of St Remy de Provence. You will have time to relax and refresh before a walk to the city center for a short tour to familiarize you with your home in Provence. Our hotel, the Hotel du Soleil, is located in the city center, walking distance to all restaurants, bars and shops. St Remy is a lively town, very chic, yet casual and considered a tourist destination as well. It is very easy to navigate with its circle road, that wraps around the town with many cobblestone street in the center. We will have dinner tonight at a favorite local bistro.

Day 2

Today we will visit the world famous wine region of the Rhone Valley. This morning we will drive to the ancient town of Chateauneuf du Pape where we will visit our favorite winery, located just outside the town. We will have a private tour of the winery and a tasting of 3 of their finest wines. Following the tour, we will enjoy a gourmet lunch on the terrace of the chateau, with breathtaking views of the vineyards and the valley below. We will visit the hilltop village of Chateauneuf du Pape for a short stroll thru the village followed by a private wine pairing presentation.  

Later in the afternoon we will drive to the fortified city of Avignon. There we will tour the Palais des Papes, home to 6 popes during the 14th century. Avignon is located on the Rhone River with spectacular views of the historic center and the Rhone River. We will end the day with a drink in the famous Place de L'Horloge, a great place for people watching, while enjoying the beauty and ambiance of this ancient city.

Day 3

Today we will have a full day tour with a local guide to the Mediterranean coast. We will spend the day in the small sea side village of Cassis, which is famous for its rose wines that date back to 500 B.C. We will visit the beautiful winery of a very special friend, just outside the town, then have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in the city center, overlooking the port and the azure waters of the Mediterranean. After lunch,you will have time to visit this quaint fishing village with a stroll thru the old town or do a little shopping or even go for a swim in the azure waters of the Mediterranean. Later this afternoon, you will enjoy a 2 hour cruise to view the spectacular calanques.

Day 4

You will have the morning free to relax and enjoy your home town of St Remy. Market day is every Wednesday, which is a must for your stay in Provence. I will walk you thru the village to introduce you to some of our trusted and favorite vendors then you will have time to shop the vendor stalls and favorite boutiques at your own pace, sample the fresh produce and listen to the music of local performers.     

Following the market, we will drive a short distance to a nearby village for an unforgettable gourmet lunch, at a favorite Provencal restaurant. You will enjoy drinks and a typical long Provencal lunch under the ancient plane trees.   

After lunch, you will have free time for a relaxing dip in the pool at the hotel, or walk a short distance to the Roman village of Glanum. You may chose to visit St Paul Mausole Hospital, where Van Gogh lived for two years and painted many of his most famous works. 

As an option, we can visit the Roman city of Arles to view the Roman arena and the Van Gogh Museum

Day 5

 Today we will visit the beautiful hillside villages of Gordes and Roussillon in the Luberon. We will drive to Gordes, perched on the hillside, with a spectacular view of the valley and vineyards below. Gordes is designated as one of the "most beautiful villages of France" and is dominated by a 16th century chateau and arcaded medieval cobblestone lanes that wind thru this spectacular village. After a walk thru the village we will have lunch in the center of the village at our favorite restaurant. This afternoon we will drive a short distance to the stunning ochre colored village of Roussillon, where the village homes are the colors of the hills which surround this colorful and artistic village. The village is the center of a mythical love story of a lover, a murder and a suicide that also describes how the village honors a redhead and the legendary fairytale.

Day 6

Today we will stay closer to home with a visit to the medieval village of Les Baux. Sitting high above the valley, it overlooks vineyards, olive groves and the beautiful Les Alpilles mountain range. Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it is a magical place. At the top of the village are the chateau ruins, where you can view the medieval catapults used in battle and see the caves used as housing, all with breathtaking views of the valley below. Following our visit to Les Baux, we will view a very unique art based multimedia exhibit in the Carrieres Lumieres, located in a former quarry, located just below the village of Les Baux. This is also a must see when visiting Provence.

Tonight we will have dinner at a very special restaurant in a nearby village. Our good friends, the owner and chef team, will make this a special night with a gourmet meal in a beautiful setting.

Day 7

Today we will say au revoir as you depart for your trip home or on to another destination. You will have private transfers to the Marseille Provence Airport or to the Avignon TGV station.
