Typical Provence Itinerary

 Please note: This is an example of a typical Provence itinerary. We will create a custom itinerary, designed to meet your personal requests and interest, with "something for everyone" in your group. 

 

Day 1

Upon your arrival to Provence, you will have private transfers from the Avignon TGV station or the Marseille airport to your boutique hotel in the center of St Remy de Provence. You will have time to relax and refresh before a walk to the city center for a short tour to familiarize you with your home in Provence. Our hotel, the Hotel du Soleil, is located in the city center, walking distance to all restaurants, bars and shops. St Remy is a lively town, very chic, yet casual and considered a tourist destination as well. It is very easy to navigate with its circle road, that wraps around the town with many cobblestone street in the center. We will have dinner tonight at a favorite local bistro.

Day 2

Today we will visit the world famous wine region of Chateauneuf du Pape. This morning we will drive to the ancient town of Chateauneuf where we will visit our favorite winery, located just outside the town. We will have a private tour of the winery and a tasting of 3 of their finest wines. Following the tour, we will enjoy a gourmet lunch on the terrace of the chateau, with breathtaking views of the vineyards and the valley below. 

After lunch, we will drive to the walled city of Avignon. There we will have a private tour of the Palais des Papes, home to 6 popes during the 14th century. Avignon is located on the Rhone River with spectacular views of the historic center and the Rhone River. We will end the day with a drink in the famous Place de L'Horloge, a great place for people watching, while enjoying the beauty and ambiance of this ancient city.

Day 3

Today we will have a full day tour with a local guide to the Mediterranean coast. We will spend the day in the small sea side village of Cassis, which is a popular wine producing village and dates back to 500 B.C. We will visit the beautiful winery of a very special friend, just outside the town, then have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in the city center, overlooking the port and the azure waters of the Mediterranean. After lunch,you will have time to visit this quaint fishing village with a stroll thru the old town or do a little shopping or even go for a swim in the azure waters of the Mediterranean. Later this afternoon, you will enjoy a 1 hour cruise to view the spectacular and historical calanques.

Day 4

You will have the morning free to relax and enjoy your home town of St Remy. Market day is every Wednesday, which is a must for your stay in Provence. You will have time to shop the vendor stalls and favorite boutiques at your own pace, sample the fresh produce and listen to the music of local performers. Your guide will be happy to assist you with purchases and introduce you to some of our favorite vendors.     

Following the market, we will drive a short distance to a nearby village for an unforgettable gourmet lunch, at a favorite Provencal restaurant. You will enjoy drinks and a typical long Provencal lunch under the of the ancient plane trees.   

After lunch, you will have free time for a dip in the pool at the hotel, or walk just a short distance to the Roman village of Glanum. You may chose to visit St Paul Mausole Hospital, where Van Gogh lived for two years and painted many of his most famous works.

Day 5

Today we will visit the important Roman city of Arles, located on the Rhone River. Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles, still today, is known for its many remains from the Roman era. This morning we will visit the contemporary art display at the Foundation Vincent Van Gogh, with many of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. After viewing Van Gogh's work, you may like to have lunch at Café La Nuit, which was one of Van Gogh's favorite restaurants in Arles and inspired one of his most famous paintings. Following lunch, we will have a short walking tour of the old town, and visit the Roman amphitheater where summer concerts and bull fights are still held today.   

Another option for the day, instead of Arles, is to visit the beautiful hillside towns of Gordes and the ochre colored, artist village of Rousillion, both located in the Luberon Valley. The Luberon valley is known for its wines, beautiful hillside towns and spectacular lavender fields. While there we will also visit the beautiful Abbaye de Senanque and the interesting lavender museum.

Day 6

Today we will stay closer to home with a visit to the historic medieval village of Les Baux. Sitting high above the valley, it overlooks vineyards, olive groves and the beautiful Les Alpilles mountain range. Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it is a magical place. At the top of the village are the chateau ruins, where you can view the medieval catapults used in battle and see the caves used as housing, all with breathtaking views of the valley below. Following our visit to Les Baux, we will view a very unique art based multimedia exhibit in the Carrieres Lumieres, located in a former quarry, located just below the village of Les Baux. This is also a must see when visiting Provence.

Tonight we will have dinner at a very special restaurant in a nearby village. Our good friends, the owner and chef team, will make this a special night with a gourmet meal in a beautiful setting.

Day 7

Today we will say au revoir as we depart for our trip home or on to another destination. We will share breakfast together then you will be driven to the Marseille airport or the Avignon TGV station.
